Chinese and American bioengineers and cardiologists have developed a nanogel that can carry healing proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids from stem cells to ailing cardiac tissue surviving after a heart attack.  This magical concoction can be sprayed onto the heart’s surface through a tiny endoscope without the need for open surgery.  It works in rats and humans won’t be far behind.

 

An injectable nanopeptisome can attach to developing blood clots and not only make them more detectable on diagnostic ultrasound but also prevent them from growing larger and more deadly.  Penn State bioengineer have developed this nanopharmaceutical that promises to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of the deep vein clots that kill when they travel to the lung and blood vital oxygen exchange.

 

On a different front, Penn State virologists have developed a a defective form of CoVid that prevents growth of the authentic and often deadly CoVid and its variants.  Simultaneously infecting cells with defective CoVid and real CoVid reduced the reproduction of real CoVid by half. 

 

Israeli bioengineers report the development of an artificial collagen that can harness the natural motions of tissues and organs within our bodies to generate microcurrents capable of power implantable pacemakers.  This material uses the piezoelectric effect, a repetitive bending driven by the motions of the heart, lungs, and bowels, to produce power.  The best news is that this faux-collagen is free of the usual toxic metals used within implantable, rechargeable batteries.

 

A palm-sized 3D printed microfilter can help detect one cancer cell among a billion red and white cells in a milliliter or human blood.  This development from Japanese bioengineers will someday enable us to diagnose cancers too small and too early to appear on radiologic or magnetic imaging using a simple blood test. This could be a revolutionary development for the early diagnosis of ovarian and pancreatic cancers.

Let’s talk about vaccines and the CoVid vaccines in particular.  Way too many Americans are rejecting CoVid vaccination, and we are already seeing the terrible impact of their vaccination hesitancy.  Cases are rising in states and regions where vaccination percentages are low, the hospitals are filling up again.  Their availabilities of ICU, ventilator, and extreme life-saving therapy that is ECMO, are again becoming inadequate given the numbers of those with severe CoVid.

 

So why do people resist vaccination?  The vaccines were developed too quickly with never before used technology.  There is no long-term safety data on the vaccines.  They could develop a severe side effects.  At best, the vaccines are only 95% effective.  Many, particularly younger Americans,  feel they are basically healthy and don’t need vaccination.

 

Here are the facts about vaccines.  First…they do work and they are safe.  Before release for general use, each vaccine was subjected to 3 phases of testing for effectiveness and safety.  The mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer are 95% effective and very, very safe.

 

Now that we have billions of shots in arms around the world, we know that CoVid vaccines definitely work against all CoVid variants and save lives.  CoVid in general and the deadly, rapidly infectious delta variant is spreading like wildfire only in those areas where a majority aren’t vaccinated.  

 

The flip side of the coin:  those fully vaccinated rarely get CoVid or silently spread CoVid.  The vaccinated that do get it have extremely mild cases, and it is rare for the vaccinated to end up in the hospital let alone in the ICU, on a ventilator, or in a coffin.  I’ve studied the data, and the vaccines are extremely safe with rare, serious reactions to any of the vaccines.

 

Because CoVid and especially the Delta variant spreads silently, it is critical that everyone is vaccinated.  If you don’t get the vaccine for yourself, get it for your family, for your neighbors, for your country.

Comment:  Protecting Yourself During The Continuing CoVid Pandemic

Look…there is much confusion about what CoVid protective measures we all should take.  The messaging from the medical community, government scientists, and the politicians who pay them has been more than confusing and conflicting.

 

As an MD who follows the science on CoVid very closely, I’m going to pass on to you the precautions I take for myself and my family.

 

Get vaccinated against CoVid.  I prefer the Moderna and Pfizer mRNA vaccines as they are statistically the most effective with the fewest potential downside risks.  Get both doses.

 

What about masks?  With the very contagious delta variant spreading, use an N95 or a KN95 mask when indoors or even outdoors walking through crowds or on mass transit.  Even vaccinated persons can symptomatically contract CoVid, especially the variants, and pass it on to you via an aerosol gust in a closed space.

 

It’s safe to be maskless outdoors if you are vaccinated, at a distance from others, and there is good air circulation and wind.  That’s why I continue to only eat a restaurants with outdoor seating.

 

You can obtain N95 certified masks that are sold for industrial use such as paint sanding without taking them off the faces of our heroic first responders.  I use a 3M 8511, and I seal the exhalation valve with duct tape.  Since I’m in NYC, I add a KN95 outside the N95 when I’m on the subways or buses.

 

What about kids in school? I continue to recommend that all children, vaccinated or not and attending indoor classes, wear multilayered and, if available, KN95 masks or N95 grade masks.  Even kids and young adults can become deathly ill.

 

I adjust my CoVid protective measures depending upon where I am, the level of circulating virus as measured by %age of positive tests, the hospitalization numbers, and the death rates.  You should too. 

 

As more of us are vaccinated and the variants are under control, we can relax our measures but not yet.

Heart Disease Short-lived in Kids with Multisystem Inflammatory Disease

Pediatric cardiologists at New York’s Columbia University now report some good CoVid news: those children with CoVid-driven inflammatory heart disease are free of it within months of their infections.  This result from a study of 45 children admitted with CoVid multi system inflammatory disease or MIS-C.

 

At admission, 80% of the kids showed significant echocardiographic abnormalities.  By 1 to 4 weeks though, only 18% had even mild cardiac inflammation and all had normal appearing coronary arteries.  By 4 to 9 months, only one child of the 45 had persistent mild cardiac dysfunction.

 

This is welcome news for all parents, but all children will still require vaccination.

CoVid Immunity Lasts At Least 9 Months

Ninety-nine percent of those infected with CoVid last winter still have circulating antiviral antibodies more than 9 months later.  Italian and British researchers tested more than 2500 residents of the Italian town Vo’.

 

The antibody levels measured months after infection did not depend upon whether an individual was symptomatic or not.   Though the absolute levels of protective antibodies faded in most cases, the levels rose in 18.6% indicating that those persons had been reinfected during the 9 month followup interval.

 

Family data revealed a 25% chance that an infected member pass CoVid to one or more other family members. Only 20% of those infected individuals are CoVid spreaders.

Helping Your Child Weather Vaccinations

What you do during the first 2 minutes after your child gets a shot makes a world of difference in how well they cope.  Pediatricians at Toronto’s York University OUCH Lab report the winning strategy following their analysis of 760 caregiver-child pairs.

 

Their recommendations?  During the first minute after the jab, just cuddle and hug. Don’t try to verbally calm using words like  “you can do this” or even worse “just suck it up.”  Save your verbal encouragement and distractions for the second minute after the needle.  The worst things you can do at anytime after the vaccination is the criticize your child for a negative reaction or dismiss their pain.

Meat Substitutes and Real Meat Only Superficially Similar

A deep dive nutritional analysis of a popular plant-based meat substitute compared with real meat shows that 90% of critical metabolite levels differ between these two product categories.  Duke University molecular physiologists report these critical discrepancies following their metabolic profiling of a popular meat substitute and grass-fed ground beef.

 

Ingredients necessary for a healthy human body found only in real beef include creatine, spermine, anserine, cysteamine, glucosamine square, and an omega-3 fatty acid DHA.  In all, beef contained 22 metabolites missing in plant-based substitutes, and the plant-based product contains 31 metabolites that meat doesn’t contain.
