For decades, people living with chronic hepatitis B have faced the reality of lifelong medication to keep the virus under control. But this week brought encouraging news from researchers across the globe working collaboratively.
In a late-stage clinical trial, an experimental medication called bepirovirsen enabled about one in five patients to stop treatment while maintaining long-term suppression of the virus. Researchers describe this as a functional cure—meaning the virus remains under control without the need for continuous medication. While it isn't a cure for everyone, it's one of the most promising advances against hepatitis B in years.
If future studies confirm these results and regulators approve the treatment, millions of people worldwide could eventually have an alternative to lifelong therapy.

Medications originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity may have another surprising benefit. Cleveland Clinic investigators reporting new findings this week at the national oncology meetings found that patients taking GLP-1 medications—including drugs such as semaglutide—appeared less likely to have several common cancers progress to advanced stages.
The study found lower rates of progression in cancers including breast, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer when compared with patients receiving other diabetes medications. While the research does not prove that these drugs prevent or treat cancer, it adds to growing evidence that they may influence how some cancers develop.
Researchers emphasize that carefully controlled clinical trials are now needed before these medications can be recommended for cancer treatment. Even so, this is one of the most closely watched areas of medical research today.

One of the most dramatic studies presented this week at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting involved pancreatic cancer—one of the deadliest forms of cancer, where treatment options are extremely limited after the disease progresses.
Researchers reported results from a Phase 3 clinical trial of an experimental oral drug called daraxonrasib. Patients receiving the new treatment lived a median of 13.2 months, compared with 6.7 months for those receiving standard chemotherapy—nearly doubling overall survival. The drug also delayed cancer progression while producing fewer serious side effects than chemotherapy.
Experts called these findings potentially practice-changing, saying they could establish a new standard second-line treatment for metastatic pancreatic cancer if regulatory approval follows.

International Group A Streptococcus vaccine initiative

Three of the world's leading global health organizations announced this week a major new effort to develop the first effective vaccine against Group A Streptococcus, or Group A Strep.
The Wellcome Trust, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the European Investment Bank unveiled a $140 million initiative to accelerate vaccine research and move the most promising candidates into human clinical trials.
Group A Strep is best known for causing strep throat, but it can also lead to scarlet fever, life-threatening invasive infections, and rheumatic heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, these infections are responsible for well over 500,000 deaths worldwide each year, with the greatest burden falling on children and young adults in lower-income countries.
Researchers say this unprecedented international partnership could significantly shorten the time needed to develop a safe and effective vaccine against one of the world's most common bacterial infections.

A new international study suggests that artificial intelligence may soon help doctors detect hidden heart disease years before symptoms develop.
Researchers from the Mayo Clinic, working with collaborators in the United States and Europe, reported this week that an AI system analyzing routine electrocardiograms—better known as ECGs or EKGs—identified patients at high risk of developing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, or HFpEF. This form of heart failure accounts for about half of all heart failure cases and is often difficult to diagnose until symptoms become significant.
In the study, the AI model detected subtle electrical patterns that physicians cannot easily recognize by eye, identifying high-risk patients with significantly greater accuracy than conventional screening methods.
Researchers say the technology could eventually allow physicians to begin treatment much earlier, potentially slowing disease progression and reducing hospitalizations. Additional prospective clinical studies are now underway to determine whether using the AI system in everyday medical practice improves patient outcomes.

For years, most concussion research has focused on male athletes. That's about to change.
Researchers at Cardiff University announced this week the launch of the largest study yet to examine how repeated head impacts affect women's rugby players. The multi-year project will follow elite athletes using and that measure the force of every head impact, along with advanced MRI brain scans, blood biomarkers, and cognitive testing.
Scientists hope to learn why women appear to experience concussions differently than men and whether repeated impacts increase the risk of long-term neurological problems. The findings could influence future return-to-play guidelines, equipment design, and safety rules for women's sports around the world.

US government supports research into one rare disorder

A little-known genetic disease affecting an estimated one in every 5,000 people reached a major research milestone this week.
The advocacy organization Cure HHT announced that Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia, or HHT, has been designated its own research topic within the U.S. Department of Defense's Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program. Previously, HHT research had to compete under the much broader category of vascular malformations.
HHT is an inherited disorder that causes fragile blood vessels, frequent severe nosebleeds, internal bleeding, stroke, and life-threatening abnormalities in the lungs, liver, and brain.
Researchers say this new federal designation creates a dedicated pathway for grant funding, allowing scientists to compete directly for research dollars focused exclusively on HHT. Patients and physicians hope the move will accelerate the development of improved treatments—and ultimately, a cure—for this often underdiagnosed disease.

One of the world's most difficult viral diseases to control and cure may soon have a powerful new weapon.
Researchers in China reported this week that an experimental mRNA vaccine protected laboratory animals against multiple Ebola virus species, including the deadly Bundibugyo strain, which caused recent outbreaks in Central Africa. Unlike earlier vaccines that target only a single Ebola virus, this broad-spectrum vaccine generated strong, long-lasting immune responses against several major strains.
Scientists say a vaccine capable of protecting against multiple Ebola viruses could dramatically improve outbreak preparedness, especially in regions where different Ebola species circulate. The next step is additional safety testing before human clinical trials can begin, but researchers believe this represents an important advance toward broader protection against one of the world's most lethal infectious diseases.

A simple blood test may soon identify people at high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease years before memory problems begin.
Researchers from Boston;’s Mass General Hospital, reporting in JAMA and presenting their findings at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference, found that measuring a blood protein called p-tau217 accurately identified healthy older adults at increased risk for future cognitive decline. People with the highest levels faced about a 38% risk of developing cognitive impairment within five years and a remarkable 78% risk within ten years.
Scientists say the test is not yet ready for routine screening because more validation is needed, but it could become a valuable tool for identifying people most likely to benefit from future preventive treatments and for enrolling volunteers in Alzheimer's prevention trials.

Hospital Superbugs Develop Resistance During Patient Therapy

Hospital superbugs, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and sometimes fungi, may be evolving much faster than scientists realized—and researchers have now watched it happen in real time.
A team at Stanford University discovered that the dangerous bacterium Enterococcus faecium can rapidly change its DNA inside a patient's intestines using tiny pieces of "jumping DNA." By analyzing repeated stool samples from a stem cell transplant patient, the researchers observed one of these genetic elements switching on a gene that helped the bacterium survive in the damaged, nutrient-poor gut. Similar genetic changes were later found independently in hospitals in Europe and Asia.
The findings suggest that dangerous bacteria can adapt during infection far more quickly than previously understood. Better genetic surveillance could help hospitals detect emerging antibiotic-resistant strains sooner and improve infection control strategies for vulnerable patients.
