The simple secret: variety. Stop doing the same workout every day.
New research from the Harvard School of Public Health, published in the journal BMJ Medicine, demonstrates that switching up your exercise routine rather than just doing more significantly lowers your risk of death.
The researchers tracked over 100,000 people for more than 30 years and found that those completing a variety of activities, including walking, weights, tennis, cycling, and others, lived longer even if their total exercise times are the same.
Mix up your workouts using 2-3 different activities per week. It improves how your body adapts, reduces overuse injuries, and gives you more “bang for your effort.”
So don’t workout till you drop out, rotate. Isn’t this yet another form of moderation which is always the best policy.

A Better Way To Freeze Organs For Transplantation

A real organ bank of ready to use kidneys, hearts, and livers is the dream of every patient on a waiting list and the surgeons who want to keep them alive. The problem is: freezing organs to ultra-low temperatures irreversibly damages them by inducing cracking.
Now, new research from Texas A&M University, published in the journal Nature, shows that thermal stress and organ fracturing can be prevented freezing the tissue to a so-called “glass transition temperature.” The researchers developed the optimal strategy using a glass model and testing various solutions and temperature lowering procedures.
In reporting this advance, the investigators give a nod to their University of Minnesota colleagues who have achieved successful transplantation of a previously frozen kidney in an animal model.
Hopefully, this technique will lead to larger supply of transplantable organs…..someday soon

Common contaminant a cancer risk for children

NDMA , N-nitrosodimethylamine, is a nitrate byproduct found in processed and smoked meats, fish, cheese, and beer. It also contaminates water and led to the recall of certain medications including Zantac, metformin, and valsartan. Long linked to higher rates of childhood cancers, biological engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology now report in the journal Nature the reason it is devastatingly more dangerous for children than adults.
Using a mouse model and studying NDMA’s effects on baby versus adult mice, they find that the more rapid cell division and growth in children produces early DNA damage that more often turns into permanent, cancer-causing mutations.
The bottom line: do all you can to shield your children and grandchildren from NDMA exposures. Remember too that you are also vulnerable to its cancer-triggering effects.

Male Birth Control Breakthrough

As the search continues for a reliable male contraceptive that can be reverse at will, reproductive biologists at Cornell University have made a significant advancement and published their study results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of. Sciences.
The investigators used a compound called JQ1, a so-called bromodomain inhibitor that interferes with the generation of the genetic material necessary for normal sperm production. Using a mouse model, this therapy effectively shuts down sperm production and fertility in treated animals. After discontinuation of the drug, both returned within 8 months.
This method is far from a clinical application. The research does demonstrate the possibility that men will be able to play a key role in birth control….someday soon.

Yes. It’s true, and another example of scientific fact being stranger than fiction. According to new research from Johns Hopkins neuroscientists published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, tiny amounts of hydrogen sulfide, the same gas that makes flatulence smell like rotten eggs. seems to protect your brain and support memory.
Your brain makes this gas on a routine basis using a protein called CSE. When researchers removed that protein in mice and the hydrogen sulfide dwindled, the results looked a lot like Alzheimer’s disease with memory loss, brain damage, and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. In addition, the brains of those mice also struggled to create new neurons, critical for learning and long-term memory.
While hydrogen sulfide is toxic in large amounts, in tiny, tightly controlled doses, it acts as a protective signal that keeps your brain cells healthy. If and when scientists figure out how to safely boost this smelly agent, it could open a completely new path to slowing or possibly preventing Alzheimer’s……someday soon.

How so. Molecular biochemists at the Harvard Medical School now report in the Journal of the American Chemical Society that, when a common gut bacterium called Morganella morganii interacts with a contaminant found in everyday products, they spark inflammation that leads to depression.
A sugar molecule produced by the bacterium combines with a pollutant called DEA, diethanolamine, found in some shampoos and cosmetics as well as in agricultural and industrial products, to create a new molecule that activates the immune system. This activation increases inflammatory proteins like IL-6 which is associated with major depressive events.
While this discovery could trigger new tests and treatments for depression, it definitely opens the door to studying the complex ways in which gut microbes affect our brains and immune systems.

Coffee Affects Our Minds By Modifying Our Gut Bacteria

Coffee, both caffeinated and de-caffeinated, modifies our brain functions by triggering changes to the bacteria in our gastrointestinal system. Microbiome researchers at Ireland’s University College Cork intensely analyzed 62 coffee and non-coffee drinkers looking at their cognition, gastrointestinal, and general physical functions. Their study appears in the journal Nature Communications.
Coffee drinking significantly modifies gut bacteria and the biochemical reactions they influence. In so doing, caffeinated coffee lowers stress and anxiety levels, improves attention and alertness, but also increases impulsivity. On the other hand, decaf coffee improves memory and learning.
The bottom line: a cup of joe turns out to be a complex elixir that impacts your gut and, by so doing, your mental and emotional functioning in so many ways.

For Kids’ Fracture Pain, Ibuprofen Suffices

Giving children extra pain medicine after a broken bone or sprain didn’t improve pain relief compared with giving ibuprofen, Advil or Motrin, alone. The extra pain killer could trigger unpleasant side effects. This from Canada’s University of Alberta pediatricians publishing in JAMA.
Their study included nearly 699 children ages 6 through 17 with painful arm or leg injuries. They were divided into 3 groups: ibuprofen alone; ibuprofen plus acetaminophen, Tylenol; and ibuprofen plus hydromorphone, an opioid. Reported pain was assessed at one hour following medication administration.
The tabulated data revealed statistically similar pain relief for all 3 groups. However, the children who received the added narcotic suffered a 4-fold higher incidence of side effects including nausea, dizziness, and unwanted sedation.
So….when it comes to treating at least this type of pediatric pain, more is not better.
