Medicine of The Future 2nd Week May 2021
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/MHMadmBr0q8
Today’s medical discoveries that point to future therapy.
New developments for:
4D Printing Spinal Scaffolds
Ultrasound Neuromodulation
Needle-Free Blood Glucose Testing s
Electrical Glue For Blood Vessels
Micro Ultrasound
Speedy Wound Healing
All this on Medicine of the Future.
Spinal fusion is a common procedure, but when a bone autograft is unavailable or fails, an artificial scaffold is needed. Enter 4D printing using collagen-hydroxyapatite ink that permits natural bony ingrowth and vascularization. A South Korean team is perfecting this process that not may not only work with bone but also with other tubular structures including muscle, tendons, and nerve. By the way, what’s the 4th dimension after width, length, and height. It’s TIME as the 3D printed prosthesis evolves with the entry of living cells.
A key to treatment of neurologic disorders including Parkinson’s is neuromodulation, the precise delivery of a stimulus to affected nerves using electricity, magnetism, and pharmaceuticals. Researchers at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie-Mellon University now add focused ultrasound to these other modalities. This non-invasive technique targets and selectively but reversibly transforms cell subpopulations more effectively than the other methods. It may also have broad applications for treatment of many neuropsychiatric disorders.
Determining blood glucose without needles is closer to reality with the report from UC-San Diego announcing development of a skin sensor capable of measuring the sugar content of sweat. An individualized calculation then accurately determines a person’s blood sugar level with 95% accuracy. A large-scale study is still ahead, but this technique could provide continuous glucose monitoring with only monthly pinpricks for recalibration.
Patching blood vessels without surgery may now be possible with an electrically-activated bioadhesive or glue developed in Singapore by nanobiologists and perfected with the help of MIT and Harvard scientists. The aptly-named Voltaglue patch is delivered to the damaged blood vessel zone via a balloon catheter and then activated in minutes by a micro-current. Voltaglue would also work to patch other tissue tears without open surgery.
A hair-thin ultrasound probe can be introduced via catheters into blood vessels and body cavities to examine and study human disease at the cellular level. Developed at the UK’s University of Nottingham, this phonon probe technique permits clinicians to study living cells at a magnification level conventionally only possible under a microscope with fixed cells on a slide.
Wound healing is often slow. Now Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered a platelet-derived purified exosomal product, PEP for short, that turbocharges the healing process of wounds that develop due to an insufficient blood supply. This compound promises to revolutionize healing in diabetics, heart attack victims, those with peripheral arterial disease, trauma victims, and those undergoing radiation therapy. The best news: PEP triggers development of normal rather than scar tissue.
These and other cutting edge solutions are coming to your doctor’s office and our hospitals…….some day soon!

Women’s Chest Pain Taken Less Seriously Than Men’s
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/v97MbXHcrX8
Women with heart attack symptoms are significantly less likely than men to receive timely therapy. This the conclusion of an NYU study just presented at the American College of Cardiology’s spring scientific sessions.
Though women with chest pain arrived at the ED as quickly as men, they were less likely to be triaged as first priority emergencies, they waited for attention 11 minutes longe. Women were less likely to undergo a timely EKG, less likely to begin cardiac monitoring, and less likely to have a timely cardiology consult.
FYI: potential heart attack victims should be seen and evaluated with an EKG within 10 minutes. Don’t be put off ladies!

Moderna Vaccine Booster Tests Effective
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/LLmUBaxZ1Mc
Moderna issues a preliminary report that their variant booster protects against both the South African and Brazilian variants. Side-effects of this booster vaccine were mild.
In this small phase 1/2 trial, 60 participants received the mRNA-1273.351 booster. Two weeks after the boost, all but one participant enjoyed an increase in protective titers against both variants and an antibody bump agains the original Wuhan strain. The levels of both local and systemic side effects to the booster were on the order of those seen after the second Moderna shot.
More testing with various dosages of this booster vaccine are underway, but these initial results are promising indeed.

Sleep Apnea Common In Severe CoVid Survivors
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/ILmDKzEneYE
More than 63% of CoVid patients surviving an ICU stay were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Pulmonologists at the All India Institute of Medical Science report their analysis of 103 CoVid patients.
Of that number, 67 underwent a formal sleep study. Of those studied, 65 or 97% met the criteria for clinically-significant sleep apnea. Even more worrisome: 49/67 or 73% had moderate to severe sleep apnea.
Those discharged from the ICU after a CoVid bout require long-term followup to assess any multi-organ damage including that to their lungs. Included in their assessment should be screening for possible sleep apnea.

Mediterranean Diet Prevents Alzheimer’s
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/FIaupv65Q1s
Better adherence to the Mediterranean diet consisting of fish, monounsaturated fats including olive oil, beans, fruits, and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of dementia. German neurologists draw this conclusion from their study of 512 subjects looking at clinical, radiologic and biochemical indicators of brain health as a function of their dietary choices.
The 343 subjects at higher risk for Alzheimer’s had reduced cognitive function, more brain atrophy by MRI scanning, and elevated biomarkers for amyloid and tau degenerative proteins. Their diets reflected a greater and consistent deviation from the Mediterranean compared with the 169 healthy controls.
Avoiding red meats, saturated fats, and abundant sugar keeps your brain healthy.

Most Of Us Clueless About Food Expiration Labels
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/4O8J48ETm0U
Fifty-four percent of us have no idea what the label “BEST if used by” means and a whopping 76% don’t know the specific safety impact of the “USE by” label. George Washington University and Johns Hopkins researchers studied the responses of 2,607 subjects confronted with common food labels.
“Best if used by” lists a date after which the taste, look, and smell of a given food will be less than satisfying. The more important “Use by” date is used for a smaller number of foods including deli meats, soft cheeses, and prepared foods and is the date after which contaminating bacteria such as listeria and molds might be present.

Sugary Drinks Trigger Bowel Cancer In Women
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/zOJBaUruPCY
Young women consuming more than two servings a day of sugar-sweetened drinks more than double their risk (2.2) of bowel cancer. Public health researchers at St. Louis’ Washington University issue this warning after comparing the dietary records of 95,464 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study.
The cancer risk escalates 16% for every extra sugary drink serving/day. That risk doubles to 32% for those consuming an extra beverage during their teen years. Conversely, eliminating that sugary drink in favor of coffee, milk, or diet drinks reduces the colon cancer risk from 17-36%.
Your bowels may not tolerate sugar well, but colon cancer feeds off it.

Nanoparticle Vaccine Immunizes Against All Variants
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/R2F2OSytgGI
A new nanoparticle-based vaccine stimulates protective antibodies to the British, South African, and Brazilian variants in addition to the original Chinese CoVid. Immunologists from San Diego’s Scripps Research Institute and Philadelphia’s Temple University now describe it on the pre-publication server biorixiv.org.
Their vaccine is a highly immunogenic version of mutated CoVid spike protein attached to nanoparticles. Testing in mice shows it induces high titers of protective antibody because the nanoparticles assure the continued persistence of CoVid antigen in the lymph node factories that manufacture protective antibodies.
This technology can lead the way to more powerful vaccines that finally squelch CoVid and prevent its mutation to ever more dangerous variants.
